Merry Christmas!
(12.25.2007)

Two days ago we had stormy weather. Today it is only a gale, but there are still big waves coming in from the Artic ocean.

(12.21.2007)

It is 7 days till winter solstice, but the fields are green, and the temperature is 9 degrees above freezing point. A cloudy sky and the lack of snow makes the twilight in the middle of the day even weaker. So it is impossible to make pictures without a tripod now.

(12.15.2007)

The mountain Toppen on the island Grytøya is steep and unapproachable. It is a natural barrier between the northwest and the southeast part of the island. A few years ago a tunnel was built trough the mountain to connect the two parts of the island. But there is still work to be done to protect the rest of the road from avalanches during the winter.

(12.09.2007)

The main building on the former trade station is old. According to the local history book, the oldest part is from 1723. Later there was an enlargement, probably when the trade station got guesthouse priviliges in 1798. In the end of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century there were a lot of bankruptcies, so the house was not well maintained for a long periode. In 1997 we ended a total renovation of the exterior of the building. So today the house looks like it did more than 150 years ago.

(12.02.2007)

The picture is showing The russian road, or "Russeveien" in norwegian. Russian war prisoners were forced to build it for the german occupants during the second world war. But time is healing all wounds. The quay they built at the skerry in the background is gone, and the waves have started to demolish the road as well.

(11.25.2007)

We have got used to green fields in november. Mentally we are already so adapted to the climate changes that snow at this time of the year is a surprise for us. Only 50 years ago it would have been exceptional to have photo motives like this in november. Now we look upon it as normal.

(11.20.2007)

Today we have got a lot of wet snow. Farming equipments are cleaned and stored, gates and doors are closed and the sides of the road are marked for the clearing of the road. It means that we are ready for the winter. But anyway it would be strange if this snow will last for a long periode.

(11.15.2007)

Today the fields are covered with snow even here at Elgsnes. But the snow in november will usually melt away after a short periode. The temperature is above the freezing point, and the melting has already started.

(11.10.2007)

The wind today has been rather cold, and the temperature is dropping. But the cultivated area looks as if this was the end of September, not the beginning of November. The meteorologists are expecting snow this week, so maybe we will wake up to a snow covered landscape in the near future.

(11.05.2007)

In the picture you can see a part of the island Andøya in the background and the point Vester-Raten on the western side of the Elgsnes bay nearer the camera.

(10.29.2007)

Last year the landscape was white the 21th October. Today we have had almost 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Farenheit). When the autumn is rainy, we are wishing for snow; but when the weather is like this, we want the autumn to remain - for a long periode.

(10.21.2007)

Even though there is very little snow in the lowland, it is now laying down to the shore. Approx. 50 years ago, it was snowing so much in the beginning of october that it was impossible to keep the sheeps out. They had to stay in the barn for the rest of the winter. Today's climate makes this an unthinkable possibility.

(10.11.2007)

The old farm-mound where the people here at Elgsnes lived from the middle ages and perhaps even earlier, is where the old house to the right is standing. The houses in the background belongs to another little farm, and are now used only for vacation.

(10.06.2007)

Today is Michaelmas. In old times this was an important day for the farmers. The harvest had to be finished, because the winter was expected any time now. But this was before the human made climate changes. Today we have sunshine from a cloudless sky and 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Farenheit). Winter is therefore not supposed to come in the nearest future.

(09.29.2007)

Yesterday we had rainy weather, but today the rain has stopped and the wind has calmed down. Most of the leaves are on the trees, so the autumn colours are still here. But the snow on the top of the mountain in the background is reminding us about the coming season.

(09.19.2007)

The sea eagle (haliaetus albicilla) is the biggest of our eagles. It can be approx. 2,80 meters (6 feet) from wing tip to wing tip. Half of all sea eagles in the world are living in Norway.

(09.12.2007)

The colours of the autumn are brown and red, but most of all yellow.

(09.08.2007)

September came with snow in the mountains. A beautiful summer has come to an end. But the autumn can also be nice, if we only use warm clouths.

(09.01.2007)

On a rainy day we all try to find shelter, even the fly in the picture found a place inside a harebell.

(08.25.2007)

The time from 23th July to 23th August is the old "dog month". It was a saying that if it starts with sun, it will end with rain. This year, at least, this is true.

(08.19.2007)

A beautiful weather with sunshine from a cloudless sky. It is time for picking wild berries, and there is a lot of bilberry this year. Elin is here taking a rest from the berry-picking.

(08.11.2007)

The sun is now under the horizon in the middle of the night. When it is cloudy like tonight, there is already a twilight by midnight.

(08.06.2007)

From old times there was a saying that the weather on 29th July could tell the autumn weather. A rainy day today would give a wet autumn, but a sunny day would make the autumn nice.

(07.29.2007)

It has been a rainy day. And the rain was needed, because it has been raining very little the last two months.

(07.26.2007)

Then the second grass silo is filled. We still have approximately 3 hectars (7,5 acres) to be harvested. From this area we will make round bales. In the picture Liutauras and Pål are spreading the grass on the top of the silo.

(07.28.2007)

This fox has found out that it is easy to find earth rats where the grass just has been mowed, so it is following the tractor from field to field. It is now so familiar with the tractor that it just steps aside when we are passing by.

(07.14.2007)

Not only people need to cool themselves. The pony in the picture likes to stay out in the water. Here it is swimming with a girl on it's back.

(07.09.2007)

High temperatures lately made the bathing season start. When the sun has heated the sand, and the tide gets up, the temperature in the water is now 18 degrees Celsius (64 F). This is warmer than usual in the beginning of July.

(07.07.2007)

The weather is good, and the kind of clouds you can see above Grytøya indicates that the nice weater will continue.

(06.27.2007)

We have finished the picking of stones from the field Mølnelvsletta. The weather is good, and soon it will be sowing time even here. Today is summer solstice, so we have only one month left with midnight sun.

(06.21.2007)

The sun is shining from a cloudless sky. But the wind from the north is still cold, so no tourist are coming here. But the conditions for soil preparation is good, so if the weather continues like this, it will soon be time for sowing.

(06.13.2007)

The mountain violet (viola biflora) is flowering, not in the mountains where it is expected to be found, but in the lowland where it is common here in northern Norway.

(06.06.2007)

Lately it has been mostly overcast weather, and even in sunny days the evenings have been cloudy. Tonight the sky is cloudless, and we can see the midnight sun for the first time this year.

(05.29.2007)

It is still snowing in the mountains, but the grass is growing in the lowland. So it is time to start cutting the lawn.

(05.24.2007)

Even though it has been rainy and cold during the celebration of our Constituional Day, it has been warmer the days before. Therefore the fields are green and even the trees have started to get green leaves. A few years ago it was normal with snow in the middle of May.

(05.17.2007)

The sunsets behind the island Andøya use to be beautiful in this time of the year. But lately there has been a lot of clouds near the horizon in northwest direction. Tonight there was a little opning in the clouds where the sunbeams could get trough and make reflections in the sea.

(05.10.2007)

There is still some time till we can see the midnight sun. But when the sea is calm like tonight, it can get a golden colour from the sky around midnight.

(05.03.2007)

Today's picture is taken with a long lens from the hill Nonshågen. It looks like the houses in the picture are close to each other, but the reality is that there is an approximate distance of 400 meters (440 yards) between the nearest and the remotest building.

(04.29.2007)

Yesterday most of the snow had melted away, but then it started to snow again. So even if the sun is shining today, the landscape is white. But this afternoon the wagtail came back from southern countries, so the spring has to be on it's way too.

(04.22.2007)

The snow is melting, and there is no more frost in the ground. In the air there is a smell of soil, and the seagulls are more talkative. And most important: The blue anemone is in flower!

(04.15.2007)

Depressions are passing by on their way eastwards. Behind them the wind from the north comes in to the coast, as gale or storm like today. There is also a lot of humidity in the air from the sea, which brings us sleet and snow as well.

(04.05.2007)

The weather has been nice for some days now, with sunshine from a cloudless sky. But the depressions are waiting out at sea, so we have to enjoy the fine days when they are still here.

(03.28.2007)

Tonight we got an example of how beautiful the sunsets are when the sea is coloured red by the reflection from the sky.

(03.23.2007)

A fox is looking for food. Most of the snow has gone now, so it is easier to find something to eat. Among the stones along the beach there are probably voles, and maybe one of them is stupid enought to come up to the surface. If there is no meal here, the fox knows a lot of other hunting fields.

(03.17.2007)

It is five o'clock PM, and Liutauras is on his way to milk the cows for the second time today. When the farmer is away, Liutauras is alone here at Elgsnes. But right now his mother is visiting him, which makes his days less lonely.

(03.10.2007)

Elgsnes is a windy area, so normally we don't have much snow here. But in some places there are snowdrifts, with banks of snow along the road as a consequence.

(03.05.2007)

We have had nice wintry weather for some time now. The sun is shining from a cloudless sky, and the wind is not stronger than a breeze. May it last!

(02.26.2007)

The beach here at Elgsnes is as nice as Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. But the climate has to change a lot before it will be equally attractive for the tourists.

(02.19.2007)

Even though the wind is cold, it is nice to see the mountain Toppen in sunshine. And where else can you find a sky as blue as this?

(02.13.2007)

Sunshine at Vester-Raten, the place here at Elgsnes where we get the first sunshine after the polar night. It is nine days since we should have seen the sun for the first time, but it has been cloudy and stormy days till now.

(02.06.2007)

The clouds are coloured red by the sun. It seems to be the nearest we get to sunshine those days.

(01.30.2007)

Stormy weather with drifting snow and blocked roads. But we have electricity, so we stay inside, waiting for the weather to calm down.

(01.26.2007)

It is getting lighter day by day, and the colours near the southern horizon tells us that the sun will soon be back.

(01.17.2007)

Today we have had wind from north - not stormy weather, only a quite normal gale.

(01.10.2007)

Just a little snow on the fields, but not enought to cover the grass.

(01.03.2007)

Happy New Year!
(01.01.2007)
